august chagrin is a novel I wrote in the early fog of my depression. I spent four years on it (2005-2009), and when I was done, I wasn’t sure what to do, or what I wanted to do, next.

In the Fall of 2010, I pulled a chapter from the novel (which was an only slightly altered version of something that had happened in my life) and read it one of the first BedPost Confessions, Austin’s ongoing staged “salacious” reading series. From there, I wrote more stories about my true life, which eventually became Naked as a Gaybird, the solo show I wrote and performed in 2015. Fumbling for the Knob, written between 2016 and 2019, was the natural extension of that show. Below is a link to the novel in its most complete draft to date.
